What is Baptism All About?

Baptism is a milestone on an unfolding journey with God into a richer, deeper way of living. In Baptism your child will become a member of God’s family here in Purbrook and will be welcomed into the church community. Children are baptised on the understanding that their parents and godparents will help them to keep the promises which they have made on their behalf, and that they will encourage them to play a part in the life of the church as they learn about the Christian faith.

PREPARING FOR YOUR CHILD’S BAPTISM – Baptism in the Church of England

The first thing to do is to fill in the application form during vestry hour (1st and 3rd Wednesday from 6pm—7pm; Broadways Coffee Shop, next to the One Stop), This form asks you the name of the godparents you have chosen for your child. You may have decided who they are already. If you are unsure whom to choose, then the following thoughts may help: Godparents should love and support your child in the years to come and should also take seriously their responsibility to pray for and with them, to set an example, and help them to learn more about their faith. It is therefore important to choose people who are baptised to be your child’s godparents.

Your child is precious and we take preparing for his or her Baptism seriously. As part of this preparation we would encourage you to attend St John’s at least once before your child’s baptism. You may want to bring the godparents along too. This is a good opportunity to get to know everyone and it will help you to feel more at home at the actual baptism service.

You are very welcome to come along to Breakfast or Café church, which has a more relaxed atmosphere.

Baptisms usually take place on the 1st and 2nd Sunday of the month(at 12:00 with up to 2 families) at St John’s Church. As some baptisms take place outside of the main Sunday service, we ask that you also come to the next Breakfast Church, as it is there that you and your child will be welcomed into the wider church family—a very important part of being baptised. On this occasion your child also receives the Baptism certificate and their baptism candle. When you booked your baptism, you should have been given the date for this. The service starts at 09:30 with breakfast. It is very child-friendly and informal. We hope that your whole family will enjoy this.

We don’t charge for christenings but would welcome a donation from you and your guests, as we are entirely funded by people’s generous donations.

Children and young people are an important part of the life of the church and they are warmly welcomed to all our services and events. That said, some things will appeal to children more than others and the following are particularly arranged with children in mind:

There are of course the seasonal events around Easter and Christmas and much more. You can find out more on the website:
